AS9100 Review, Updates, and Additions

9100 bannerThe most recent revision is AS9100D which is also now based on ISO 9001: 2015.  While ISO 9001 is applicable to every organization, AS9100D focuses on the Aerospace supply change.

Generally, AS9100D adds Aerospace specific requirements to ISO 9001 along with some specific quality management system requirement additions and additional documentation.

When Implementing a Quality Management System to comply with AS9100D, and organization must also be addressing any customer specific requirements, along with the general supplier specific requirements and any regulatory requirements (e.g. FAA):

For Example, Aerospace Engine Supply Chain requirements include (But are not limited to)

  • AS13000 - Problem-Solving standard for suppliers within the aero-engine sector
  • AS13003 - Measurement Systems Analysis Requirements for the Aero Engine Supply Chain
  • AS13004 - Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and Control Plans

There are additional guidance documents available in the Supply Chain Management Handbook (SCMH) as well.

The focus of the AS9100D requirements added to ISO 9001 is on the Aerospace & Defense Industry needs. An important point is that a company currently registered to ISO 9001 that also has automotive requirements such as APQP, FMEA & PPAP built into their system or with staff that is familiar with these requirements will have an easier time upgrading their current system.

Production Process Verification (Basically the “First Article Inspection” FAI) and Work Transfer processes are AS9100 Specific, but companies experienced in PPAP will find that they are quite prepared to meet these requirements. Additionally, suppliers currently certified to ISO 9001 that have dealt with Aerospace customers may find that they meet many of these requirements by meeting current customer and contractual requirements and that they just need to formalize some of their quality management systems to fully comply with AS9100

Some of the most significant AS9100D specific requirements (over and above the ISO 9001 quality management system requirements) include:

  • Operational Risk Management
  • Configuration management
  • Product Safety
  • Project Management
  • Prevention of Counterfeit parts
  • More explicit and formal requirements for Design process including verification, validation, testing…
  • Additional control of Nonconforming work requirements
  • Foreign Object Damage (FOD) Processes

Additional requirements (To ISO 9001) are also listed in various sections including

  • More detailed requirements for control of external providers
  • Specific Training requirements
  • Many details in the Control of Production and service provision section including
    • Work instructions and criteria
    • Inspection and Records
    • Control of equipment and software
    • Production process verification
    • Traceability
    • Preservation
    • Release
This is intended to provide a higher-level view of the Aerospace specific requirements, not an exhaustive list of every requirement.
